Audits
Questions:
Will my application be audited?

Answers:
Will my application be audited?
All student assistance files are subject to audits. Each year a percentage of student assistance files are audited to verify the accuracy of information provided by the student, their spouse and/or parent(s) on their application. If your file is audited, you will be required to provide documentation verifying information you, your spouse and/or parent(s) have submitted. Additional assistance will be withheld until the audit is completed. Your prompt reply to an audit request will help prevent delays.
- What happens if I do not provide correct information on my application for assistance?
False or misleading statements, failure to fully disclose information, and acts of document tampering or forgery are considered fraud. Audits which identify suspected fraud will be referred to the appropriate authorities for formal investigation and may result in charges under the Criminal Code of Canada.
- What is an overaward?
It is the amount of Canada Student Loan or Nova Scotia Student Loan or Canada Study Grant issued to you in excess of the amount you were entitled to receive. An overaward occurs when your resources increase or your costs decrease and this reduces your assessed need. For example, if you have already negotiated your Certificate of Eligibility for $5500 but then decided to take 4.0 credits instead of 5.0, your tuition cost has decreased. With a reduced tuition, your file is reassessed and your need is reduced to $4500. Because you have received more money than you were eligible to receive, you will then have an overaward of $1000. Outstanding overawards are deducted from future assistance if you are eligible.
